Choose this day whom you will serve…
As for me and my household we will serve the Lord. –Joshua 24:15 (NRSVC)

Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges and the officers of Israel and they presented themselves to God. Joshua said to the people. “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel…Now therefore revere the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and in faithfulness, put away all gods that your ancestors served beyond the river and in Egypt and serve the Lord. Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the river or the gods the Amorites in whose land you are living but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Then the people answered, ‘Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went and among all the peoples through whom we passed and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land.

Therefore we will also serve the Lord, for He is our God.’ –Joshua24:1-2A; 14-19 (NRSVCE)

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen: Prayer – Our Father…

Concerning Prayer

Jesus teaching said, “Whenever you pray do not be like the hypocrites for they love to stand and pray in the Synagogues and at the street corners so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward but whenever you pray go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

Pray then in this way:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts (trespasses) as we also have forgiven our debtors and do not bring us to the time of trial but rescue us from the evil one.

For if you forgive others their trespasses your heavenly Father will also forgive you but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” –Matthew 6:5-15 (NRSVCE)
