(CNS) A 75 year old Dutch Jesuit who refused to leave war torn Syria, instead staying in the Old City of Homs to help the poor and homeless was beaten by armed men and martyred for Jesus Christ today.

Father Van Der Lugt who would have turned 76 on Thursday, 10 April had been living in Syria since 1966 after a brief period spent in Lebanon–he was also a Psychotherapist. In the 1980s he opened “Al Ard” a spiritual center built outside the city which housed about 40 children with developmental disabilities from nearby villages.
